Offshore: The king mackerel, cobia and mahi are biting well on the live menhaden that seem to be everywhere! The amberjack bite has slowed a bit. This might be a good thing because I dont know how much more amberjack my reel drags could take!

Inshore: The redfish are biting well around the docks and these are upper and over slot fish. These fish are nailing the huge live menhaden and busting us off in the docks. My 20lb gear has been no match so far. Broken 40lb leaders and bent hooks have been the norm latley. I have up sized twice to yank them out, and after going 6-0 with no reds to the boat I am bringing my shark tackle tomorrow! The flounder bite is also good around the same docks and there are some big ones that like the same huge live menhaden! To eat a bait that size you gotta be big! Speaking of flounder……

Today was one of those trips that reminded me why I became a Captain. After being broken off in the docks by the redfish we heard the spanish bite was doing ok off the beach. So we picked up and ran out just to find it had slowed. My usual luck! After a fun but wasted ride out we came back to the redfish dock. We got broke off by another redfish. On the boat I had Nathan, his dad and I think his grandfather. I cant remember Nathan’s age but I think he was 12. I was waiting all morning for his rod to go off and with 20 minutes left in the trip boy did it! Drag was peeling but he got it away from the dock with just a tiny bit of help from dad. I am sitting there with the net waitng for a nice redfish to come up, but instead we were suprised by a 4.6lb flounder! Nathan and I slapped high fives and I put another monster menhaden on his hook and cast him back in the docks. Two minutes might have passed at the most and his rod is screaming again! Ok, NOW I’m ready to net Mr. Redfish…..and up comes another flounder and its BIGGER! 5.0 lbs and a NC citation! Thanks again guys!  With back to back flounder like that you might want to grab a lottery ticket!

Awesome! This dock is the same dock another of my charter’s caught a 13.6lb flounder on Sept, 11 2006. I dont know what catch is my favorite!

Long time customer and friend Brian James with a nice Mahi. This guy always brings the luck! This mahi busted a friends topwater plug on another boat, came over to ours stole a bait and we chummed him back, and Brian hung  his bait right over the side and we watched this mahi eat it!

Inshore: The flounder and trout bite has been steady. The red drum are here but are spread out now with the warmer water temps.  Live bait and Berkley Gulp! and DOA shrimp have been producing well.

Nearshore: The spanish bite has been decent, not bad but decent for this time of year. The cobia, dolphin, and amberjacks are biting well from 10 miles out with a few cobia seen right off the beach. The king mackerel are starting to move in closer and the bite is picking up. Shark season is right around the corner.

Summer is in full swing and I hope I can say with some degree of certainty that the fishing is also!

Inshore the black drum are biting well around the docks on fresh shrimp fished on a carolina rig. The red drum bite is becoming more consistent. We have had good success on the flats on low wind days chasing the schools. The drum have been caught on Berkley Gulp! jarkbaits and clouser minnows.

This is shaping up to be another great year. Our charters are catching lots of fish and it should only get better! Now is the time to book your trip and come fishing! Hope to see you soon!

That has all changed with the arrival of the Spanish Mackerel and the Bluefish! Both are biting well now and the season is finally in full swing. We have high hopes that the Atlantic Bonito will show up any day as well. The smooth dogfish sharks have the inlet covered up and are lots of fun on light tackle. Black Drum are biting on fresh shrimp fished around the docks on a carolina rig. Try the falling tide for best results. It was such a slow start, and the water temps were so cold, we did some freshwater bass fishing at Sutton lake with good results and had a great time. When the fishing is tough sometimes you just have to fish for what will bite! Everytime those Bass would jump it reminded me of the Snook in Florida!

Keep an eye out for the Spanish Mackerel article we have in NC Sportsman this month. It should be on the news stands around the 17 th of this month.

We have been doing great with the trout, sharks, and even some redfish and snook. The snook are moving into the canal systems and we have been targeting them at night with live shrimp. Tons of mangrove snappers are around these snook lights and tonight we are going to put the video cam on night vision and try to get video of it if I can get them to hit a fly. Cant wait.

The sharks are abundant on the flats right now and we are pulling 80 pound monsters out of 2 foot of water with live ladyfish. There is so much going on I have to force myself to get off the boat some days!

I had a cool opportunity to guide Jim and Fred Anderson for a half day. We slammed out with some small reds (1 nice keeper), a few small trout, a nice snook and a nice pompano. Fred Anderson is good friends with Stu Apte and is mentioned in Stu’s new book. It was great to share the day with you guys and I enjoyed the info you guys shared about Stu. Here is a video of the non stop redfish action we had. We caught them on every cast and easily had over 15 in a half hour or so.

I will also have a new video out soon on the Beavertail. I love this boat. It will run through the flats in areas so shallow that birds are standing! It will get up in less than a foot and allows me to access much more water than my previous flats boat did.

We have already made one of many trips to the Everglades this year. I had Capt. Charles Powell’s son Brandon with us for a week. He leaves at the end of the month for Airforce boot camp and it was pretty cool to see him get some fishing in before he leaves.

The Amberjack fishing was a blast this year. I was once told if these fish would jump no one would go to Florida to Tarpon fish!

For you fly tiers here is a video I just finished on how to tie a larger popper fly. It is what I use to catch the large Amberjacks on fly rod.
