Topsail & Surf City Outdoors-Fishing Report 12-28-08

December 29th, 2008 by CCCB Press

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. If you don’t know it already, the fishing is slow. The surf is slow but a few fish will always bite. Usually it’s where I ain’t! Lots of little trout and some Red drum are still biting for the hardcore fisherman. These last few warm days have warmed the water back in the sound a couple of degrees and have gotten a few fish feeding. Like I’ve said before, find the dark bottom areas folks. A good sunny day in the 70’s will usually turn the fish on this time of the year. Loads of reds are in the sound still and are spooky as heck too. The creeks are usually a good place to start looking for fish because there will be some bait in them. Find the bait, find the fish! Now don’t think fishing in the cold is easy,I’m just saying if you have to go fishing,go!

On the hunting side, Deer season is out after the first of January so you better get your fill for a while. Duck season is in but there ain’t many birds around the sound. If you want to go to the swamps or the Northeast Cape Fear you can find some Woodies and Ringnecks along with an occasional Greenhead. Loads of mergansers are around and they will come to the decoys. Now on another note,Get your best wildgame recipe and enter the Wildgame Cookoff at Poplar Grove Plantation on January 24,2009 if you want more info call Ann Williams at 910-794-0292 or check out the website- capefearwildlifeexpo.com. They have 3 divisions for game, fish and fowl. Cash prizes for all divisions. On March 21st and 22nd the 1st Annual Cape Fear Wildlife Expo will be at the Schwartz Center and the Coastline Convention Center. This is a must for anyone who enjoys the outdoors and they will have something for everyone. Bring the whole family! Well folks I’ve got to go now and pack for one more hunting trip of the year. Everyone have a safe and Happy New Year and take a kid with you!

Topsail & Surf City Outdoors-Fishing Report 12-16-08

December 16th, 2008 by CCCB Press

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. There are still a few hungry fish around but the fishing is getting hard folks. I know some of the hardcore guys are still surf fishing and working the sound. They are catching some fish too. Reds are biting in the surf and sound. Speckled trout are biting too. Some Black Drum are being caught and some of them are good sized fish too. Heck a bad day fishing still beats a good day at work!
Offshore it’s rough and everybody is staying on the hill. These fast moving fronts and the wind have got it too rough offshore for everyone but those guys with real big boats and they are still getting pounded.
On the hunting side, Deer season is in till the 1st and duck season is in till Jan. 24th. Canada goose season for resident birds is in till Feb 13th. Check your regulations digest or go to www.ncwildlife.org to check seasons, bag limits, and dates! I went on Saturday and saw a lot of birds, they just wouldn’t come in range. I guess if you are a duck and have flown from somewhere in Canada to here, you’ve seen every kind of decoy spread known to mankind. Plus the fact that bad things happen around those plastic ducks! On another note, the holidays are right around the corner and if Santa don’t know what you want you might not get it. Ladies, a gift certificate from Bass Pro or Dick’s or any of the fine local outdoors business’s is a prefect gift. Guy’s, if your better half knows how to accessorize with Realtree, you’ve got it made! Well that’s about it for this week so remember to be safe and take a kid with you!
