Coastal Carolina Outdoors Report
March 31st, 2008 by CCCB PressHi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. I don’t know about you folks but I’m ready for the weather to make up it’s mind. Hot one day, then cold the next. Anyway the water is warming up and the fish are getting a little more active. The Trout are still biting up in the River and mullet are biting in the surf. Back in the sound, the Reds are up around some of the docks but are still slow to bite. I’ve heard the the backs of some of the creeks are holding some fish as well. This time of the year look for the warmest water you can find. Dark bottoms and Oyster bars where the sun can warm it up will attract fish on a sunny day. There is still a lot of moss on the bottom so try to keep you bait above it or you will be cleaning your hook every cast. Now if anybody finds a good spot you can call me but don’t tell anybody else. It will be our secret!
Offshore the fish are biting but nobody is going considering the weather lately. Some friends of mine went about 45 miles out the other day and it was slick calm. A couple of hours later it was rolling 6-8 footers. Now they were in a vessel capable of handling it but it wasn’t any fun getting back in. Be careful out there folks, a fish ain’t worth your life! Use common sense and weather reports to your advantage and remember that the weatherman ain’t right that much!
On the other side, Turkey spring season comes on April 12 and goes out May 10. I can’t wait, been practicing my calling, got my pack together, got my gun patterned, all I have to do now is wait! As Charlie Brown would say, AARRRGGGHHHH! Folks we are blessed to have Turkeys in every county in this state but the best areas for them seems to be along the NC-Va border counties. Caswell Co. is the top of the list and they have quite a bit of gamelands there. Get the guys together and make a roadtrip. It ain’t that far and the chances off getting a Tom there are high! Well thats about it for this week so, be safe and take a kid with you.
